Derby County vs Burton Albion: Match Preview

Derby County vs. Burton Albion: Match Preview

League action returns to Pride Park on Tuesday where Derby host Burton in a “Derbyshire Derby”.

Nigel Clough’s Burton will be in high spirits coming off a 2-1 home victory over promotion hopefuls Norwich at the weekend, with goals coming from Knightley and loanee Cauley Woodrow. Derby on the other hand will be looking to bounce back from another disappointing home result last Tuesday where they lost 4-3 to Cardiff. Despite leading 2-0 early on with goals from de Sart and Bent they were unable to hold the lead, finished off by conceding a 90th minute penalty to ensure Cardiff went home with the 3 points.

The previous 5 meetings between Derby and Burton has produced 4 wins for the Rams and just the 1 for the Brewers – which came earlier this season in a 1-0 home victory. Burton currently sit 20th, 4 points from relegation, whilst Derby are 11th, 8 points off a play off spot.

Burton have 3 wins and 3 losses in their last 6 championship games and are currently in better form than Derby, who 2 wins 3 losses and a draw

derby county form

Burton have failed to score in 34% of their games this season and average scoring 1.00 goal and conceding 1.88 goals per away game.

Statistically Derby remain defensively strong, with the second most clean sheets of any team in the Championship (15/31), only second to Brighton. However with 6 goals conceded in their last 2 home games it does question their recent defensive form.

Darren Bent enters the game in a great run of form, with 4 goals in his last 2 games. Bent and Ince are currently tied with 12 total goals each across all competition and will both be aiming to increase their tally.

Prediction : Derby 2 – Burton 1

With Bent’s recent goal scoring form and Burton conceding in their last 16 games, I expect Bent to get on the score sheet again. Derby’s 6 goals across their last 2 games suggests they’ll be capable of scoring past Burton, however their defence has been poor recently and I can’t see them keeping a clean sheet.

Burton have scored 7 goals in their last 5 league games and I expect their goal scoring run to continue, however I don’t think it’ll be enough to get any points from this game.
